Environmental Impact of Pet Waste
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has categorized pet waste as a nonpoint source of pollution (NPS). NPS means the pollution comes from diffuse sources instead of industrial sources. Basically, when runoff moves, it picks up and carries natural and human-made pollutants , finally depositing them into lakes, rivers, wetlands, and ground water. Other NPS sources of pollution include oil, grease, herbicides, and insecticides. (EPA-841-F-94-005)
